With the end of the Golden Visa, many British citizens looking to relocate to Spain are wondering what options are still available. Fortunately, Spain offers alternative visas that allow foreigners to reside in the country, depending on their financial situation and professional status.

The Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV) is a great option for retirees or individuals with passive income who do not intend to work in Spain. Applicants must demonstrate sufficient financial means, typically around €2,400 per month, and have private health insurance. This visa does not permit employment or business activities within Spain.

For remote workers and freelancers, the Digital Nomad Visa provides a legal way to live in Spain while working for foreign companies or clients. This visa requires proof of steady income (at least €2,520 per month) and is designed for professionals who work online or run international businesses. It also comes with potential tax benefits under Spain’s Startup Law.

A common question is whether buying property in Spain grants residency. The answer is no—purchasing a property does not automatically provide a visa or residency rights. However, property ownership is open to non-residents, who simply need a NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) to complete the transaction. If a non-resident buyer wants to live in Spain for more than 90 days in a 180-day period, they must apply for a visa that suits their circumstances, such as the Non-Lucrative Visa or Digital Nomad Visa.
